WRITTEN ASSEMBLY QUESTION
TABLED ON 17 MAY 2000
FOR ANSWER BY THE SECRETARY FOR ENVIRONMENT
ON 23 MAY 2000

Alun Cairns (South Wales West): What is the total figure for all extractions (including aggregate) from the Bristol Channel since 1960. (WAQ5426)

Sue Essex: Figures provided by the Crown Estate indicate that since 1962 just under 80,900,000 tonnes of material has been extracted in the Bristol Channel. Waste coal accounts for less than 10,000 tonnes of this total, the rest being sand. There is also a considerable amount of maintenance dredging undertaken on behalf of the ports along the coast of South Wales. The greater proportion of this material, comprising silts, muds and sands, is deposited in the Channel under licence from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries.
