The National Assembly for Wales

WRITTEN ASSEMBLY QUESTION
TABLED ON 17 MAY 2000
FOR ANSWER BY THE SECRETARY FOR ENVIRONMENT
ON 23 MAY 2000

Alun Cairns (South Wales West): What other experiences does the Environment Agency or the DETR hold in relation to sand dredging and its effects on UK beaches? (WAQ5427)

Sue Essex: Assembly officials are aware of generic work carried out by the Environment Agency and DETR in connection with coastal processes and sand dredging. For example, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) has recently begun work for DETR on "The Rehabilitation of the Seabed Following Marine Aggregate Extraction" and the Assembly is involved. Officials are also aware of other work, particularly in relation to the south and east coast of England, but this tends to be more of a site specific nature with less applicability to circumstances along the South Wales coast.
