WRITTEN ASSEMBLY QUESTION
TABLED ON 17 MAY 2000
FOR ANSWER BY THE SECRETARY FOR ENVIRONMENT
ON 23 MAY 2000

Alun Cairns (South Wales West): What verification is made of the information provided by the sand dredging organisations in relation to the statistics they offer relating to sand movements on Welsh beaches? (WAQ5428)

Sue Essex: The coastal and marine monitoring data is collected by independent professional bodies, but paid for and provided to the Assembly by the dredging companies under strict conditions attached to the extraction licence. The data and the method of collection is subject to rigorous scrutiny by Assembly officials using a computer-based Geographical Information System (GIS).
