Peter Black (South Wales West): What companies currently hold licences to dredge sand in the Bristol Channel, what licence applications are outstanding and which companies are involved in these applications? (WAQ6472)

Sue Essex: In Welsh waters Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd have a licence to dredge sand from Helwick Bank. Three companies (Hansen Aggregates Marine Ltd, United Marine Dredging Ltd and South Coast Shipping Ltd) have licences to remove sand from Nash Bank and Holm Sands. South Coast Shipping also have a licence to remove sand from the West Middle Ground. A planning permission to dredge on the Bedwin Sands was granted to Severn Sands Ltd in 1991 by the former Gwent County Council.

Applications for licences currently being progressed in Welsh waters are : Nash Bank (Hansen Aggregates Marine Ltd, United Marine Dredging Ltd and South Coast Shipping Ltd); North Middle Ground (Crossavon Ltd) and; at Helwick Bank, Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd are seeking to vary the condition attached to the existing licence restricting the tonnage that can be removed.
