LIBRARY ENQUIRY CBEJ0010854: FURTHER REPLY
TO ENQUIRY REGARDING HELWICK BAY
On the 20th April Jenny asked "Please
can I have details of ail the licences issued for the mining of sand in
Helwick Bay over the last 100 years?"
I have now received this informatian from
the Crown Estate.
Until 1991 licences in the Brisiol Channel were for multiple areas with
no requirement to identify the area from which sand was taken, Helwick
Bank, however, has only ever been licensed to one company at a time which
has enabled the Crown Estate to compiie the attached spreadsheets. Some
of the tonnages were provided by the licensee at the time but in other
cases the Crown Estate have estimated the quantity extracted. They cannot
guarantee the accuracy of figures between 1974 and 1990 but are as confident
as can be that there is unlikely to be any significant under reporting.
The Crown Estate have asked that these caveats are made absolutely clear
in any further quoting or use of these figures.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or one of my colleagues if you would
like to discuss it further.
